Reasons Why Using a Wood Conditioner/Board Butter is Beneficial

Why use a wood conditioner for wood cutting boards, wooden bowls, and wooden utensils?

Wood conditioner (commonly called Board Butter) is used on cutting boards, wooden bowls, and utensils to protect and nourish the wood, prolonging their lifespan and maintaining their appearance.

Board Butter is typically made up of a food grade mineral oil or fractional coconut oil and beeswax.

Here are several reasons why using a wood conditioner is beneficial

Moisture Protection

Wood conditioner helps to seal the pores of the wood, reducing its ability to absorb moisture. This is particularly important for items like cutting boards and utensils that come into contact with water frequently. By preventing moisture absorption, wood conditioner helps to prevent warping, cracking, and splitting of the wood.

Enhanced Durability

Conditioning the wood strengthens its structure, making it more resistant to wear and tear. This is crucial for items like cutting boards and utensils that are subjected to repeated use and cleaning.

Prevention of Odors and Stains

Wood conditioner creates a protective barrier on the surface of the wood, making it less susceptible to absorbing food odors and stains. This is important for maintaining the cleanliness and hygienic properties of cutting boards and utensils.

Prevention of Odors and Stains

Applying wood conditioner can enhance the natural beauty of the wood, bringing out its grain and color. It gives the wood a richer, deeper look, enhancing its aesthetic appeal.

Food-Safe Protection

Many wood conditioners are made from natural oils or waxes that are food-safe, meaning they won't introduce harmful chemicals or toxins into food preparation areas. This is essential for ensuring the safety of food prepared on cutting boards and utensils.

Prevention of Odors and Stains

Wood conditioned with a suitable product is easier to clean and maintain. It can be wiped clean with mild soap and water without causing damage to the wood's surface.

Longevity

Regularly conditioning wood items can significantly extend their lifespan, saving you money and reducing waste over time.

Overall, using a wood conditioner on cutting boards, wooden bowls, and utensils helps to preserve their quality, maintain their appearance, and ensure their safety for food preparation.

Apply a good amount of food safe mineral oil to the entire surface of the board and let it soak in. You can also use a beeswax/mineral oil mixture. This will make the board much more moisture resistant, while keeping the wood lubricated enough to avoid drying out and warping. All of our cutting boards are seasoned before you receive them for your convenience and to protect the board.
